Jaipur is the first planned city of India was founded by
Maharaja Jai Singh II in the 18th century. The city was carefully planned and
built according to the ancient Hindu treatise on architecture. Apart from being
a diplomatic warrior, Jai Singh had interests in astronomy. The amazing
observatory, Jantar Mantar was built by him.

architecture.
The Old City is also known as the "Pink City"
as the entire city was painted pink on the orders of Maharaja Man Singh II when
the Prince of Wales visited Jaipur in 1876, as pink is the color of
festivity in Jaipur.

RajasthanCity Palace - This magnificent
palace of
Jaipur comprises of buildings, courtyards and gardens. The palace, with its
fortifying walls, represents a congruous blend of Mughal and Rajasthani
architecture. Housed in the palace is a museum with a fascinating collection of
rare manuscripts, Mughal and Rajasthani miniatures, carpets, costumes, textiles,
arms and royal paraphernalia.
Hawa Mahal - This
"Palace
of Winds" was constructed in the late 18th century and is a five-storey
building. Its attractions are the intricately made sandstone windows and
screens.
Jantar Mantar - This observatory was built in 1728 and
has several astronomical instruments for measuring the position of stars and
calculating eclipses.

Approximately 11 kms from Jaipur is the imposing Amber Fort. The construction of
this fort began in 1592 and it is built in red sandstone and white marble. It is
an astonishing example of Rajput architecture and houses the splendid Sheesh
Mahal or Mirror Palace.
Royal Gaitor - These are the cenotaphs of the
royal family, including that of Jai Singh, made in white marble with intricately
carved peacocks.
Jaigarh Fort - This impregnable fort was built in
1726. Jai Ban, the largest cannon in Asia, is inside the fort.
Samode
Palace - Situated in the rustic village of Samode, is one of the most
magnificent and opulent examples of Rajput architecture, the Samode Palace. The
palace of Rajasthan is impressively decorated with exquisite paintings
and mirror work.
Nahargarh Fort - Also known as the Tiger Fort,
the
Nahargarh Fort in Rajasthan appears breathtaking when floodlight at
night. The views from the fort are beautiful.
Shopping in JaipurJaipur is the place to buy
your souvenirs and shop to your heart's content. There are a host of wonderful
things that one can pick up. The
Johri Bazaar is the
gems and jewellery center, where one can purchase beautiful
precious and semi-precious stones. The
Kundan work (enamel work on gold) jewellery is famous in
Jaipur. Handicrafts include papier-mache items, marble statues, woollen carpets,
cotton rugs, enameled ware and brass ware and can be picked up for a song.
